I definitely think that IM will have a good chance of replacing e-mail, especially with the introduction os chat sites and the like. People always said that the e-mail would never replace snail mail, but just think about the last time that you actually sent a hand-written letter to anyone.
I think that e-mail will hold a role for official business until IM software develops to the point where you can receive confirmation of receipt of IMs.
