Bill Vick is a superb interviewer - thanks for sharing such great comments. I particularly liked:

    >> Even on Skype: we're talking right now on Skype. Skype is a social media tool, there's is a mood-message tone that you can set that is next to your name icon and says whatever you want, and you can use it there as well to search for things... and I have to say I've used it myself quite a few times, to search for people. People I wanted to hire and I could not find anywhere else. <<

    Very smart.

    Enjoy,

    Robin,

Agreed. I used to look at social media sites as a virtual "water cooler" where everybody asks..."hey dude, what's up?" I hated it. I had a message I needed to get across...I wanted to expose my business, etc.

But then I got to thinking...

You don't expose your business that way in REAL life. Why is this any different?

Answer: It IS different. It's MORE powerful. How often can you leave the water cooler at work and have your conversation recorded for others to see and get a grasp of who you are? It doesn't exist.

I used to be a mortgage broker before I got into the software development business and I've gotta tell you...

I NEVER landed a mortgage deal from quotes alone. It was through trust and and friendships. Why is it that I thought it was any different online?

Well, I'm coming through in my thinking again. Your post just helped me clarify my thoughts a little better. Thanks for that. I'm bookmarking your blog to my favorites right now. T his is the kind of insights I'm looking for. Thanks again. Excellent food for thought.

    Great point Jason.

Thanks for unrolling your thoughts here.

Oh yes, social media may be somewhat time consuming, but there is much to be discovered at that particular watering hole.

For a more "targeted" social media experience, check out Ning.com

Anyone can form a social network there, centered around a common theme. And I think there is a proliferation of these special purpose social networks. They bridge the gap between a pure social network (facebook, myspace, hi5) and a discussion group/mailing list by combining those functionalities and at the same time limiting membership to those who share a particular interest. Cool.

    Hi Sepp,

I didn't read anyone saying this is time-consuming in here. Why do you say
that? You are having that experience and you are frustrated with it?

What do you mean for a more "targeted" social media experience and how does
this apply to small business recruitment?

I am just trying to bridge a bit more your comment, as it appears as a
straight plug to promote Ning and less of an extension of what we are
discussing here. Maybe I am misunderstanding but this is the impression I
    get.
