Robin Good's Master New Media: Basic Web Site Design: How To Start Designing Your First Blog Or Web Site

Nice post Robin - comprehensive as always!

I wondered where you stood on the CMS/blog-as-website issue. Do you think it's a good idea to have a static website and a separate blog; to double up the design across two distinct destinations; to let your blog *be* your website, with an about page and such; or to go the Joomla/Drupal/WordPress route and build a homepage and blog with the same software, and in the same location?

I guess to an extent that might be influenced by the nature of the business in question. I'd be interested to hear about what people think here - do you think there are certain businesses that benefit from having a blog or conversely a static homepage as their main presence on the web?

More of an addendum really, as everything here applies whichever way you go, I'd say.

    Hi Michael,
    thanks for your kind question.

I do not think one should ever go anymore the static web site way. Even if you use templates, you should really always use a CMS/blog platform to publish your contents online.

I do not think there is any one advantage anymore in going to have a part of your web site done with a static web site page building system. Even if you are not going to blog, or have anything to do with bloggers, a blog system is the best way to power and publish your own web site.

Thanks, Robin. That makes good sense, and I guess there are plenty of options available - as you've pointed out - in terms of templates that will create a professional "look" for your content. I'm amazed by some of the things I've seen Drupal, WordPress and Joomla sites do - the third-party theme industry seems to be thriving, and for good reason.
